Q&A with Kengo Kuma – Kengo Kuma & Associates – Lead Designer for the Global War on Terrorism Memorial

Kengo Kuma Lead Designer for GWOTMF

Q: Why do you think the Global War on Terrorism Memorial is important?

A: I believe this Memorial is extremely important, not only for America but for the entire world. Terrorism is a global issue, one shared by all countries. The situation we face today is complex, and this Memorial can symbolize hope. It’s a message that the world desperately needs.

Q: Do you have any personal connection to the events of September 11th?

A: Yes, I lost my dear friend Sugiyama San in the World Trade Center on September 11th. He worked for Fuji Bank in Berlin and left behind his wife and two children. He was such a kind, hardworking family man. The World Trade Center seemed so strong—it was one of the most beautiful buildings in the world—and then, suddenly, it disappeared, and my friend was gone. It’s hard to find the words to express those feelings.

Q: What made you want to be involved?

A: When I received the invitation to be considered as lead designer, I felt as though it was a personal invitation from my friend encouraging me to get involved. A very simple message from him. I believe the Memorial should also convey a simple, yet powerful message. We can all share in the idea together that we want to do our best to achieve that kind of special Memorial.

Q: What message do you hope this Memorial will send to future generations?

A: I hope this Memorial will serve as a bridge for future generations, allowing them to feel something beyond just the physical monument. We want to pass this message on to the younger generation. That is the true role of a Memorial—to carry a message across time.

Q: What does it mean to you to be the lead designer of this project?

A: My team and I at Kengo Kuma & Associates are honored to be part of this project, which I believe is one of the most significant projects in the world right now. The Memorial will be built on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., among the other Memorials, each representing a period in history and humanity. The Global War on Terrorism Memorial should stand as part of that legacy while also reflecting the complexities of our time. We look forward to ensuring that people, experiences and beauty are at the forefront of this project.
